Minutes of Post Meeting June 14, 2010

 

 

Commander Richard Rettler called the Meeting to Order at 7:30 pm with 36 members present.

 

Roll Call of Officers: 4 excused: Dick Lautenschlager, Kimberly Kamps, Jim Kuhlmey and Bob Lichtfuss.

 

Minutes: Handed out the minutes to the membership to read and they were accepted as read.

 

Quartermaster Monthly Report: Motion made by Mike Borg, second by Mike Page and passed to accept as reported.

General information: 1) newsletters and flyers were passed around to the membership to view; 2) letter from National V.F.W. Commander-in-Chief Thomas J. Tradewell, Sr. congratulating Post Commander Richard Rettler and the Post in achieving 100% membership for the 2009 – 2010 year. The Post received a streamer for this accomplishment which will be added to the Post Colors; 3) letter from Wisconsin V.F.W. State Commander Wilfred “Twiggy” Johnson to Post Commander Richard Rettler for achieving All State Commander. Commander Rettler will receive a white hat, pin and citation at the V.F.W. State Convention.

 

Thank You: 1) from the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King for $500 donation to their Bus Fund. This was from the Funeral Fund; 2) Old Glory Honor Flight for the $500 donation to help send WW II Veterans to Washington D.C. to see the WW II Memorial; 3) Leroy and Theresa Kohlbeck for a plant; 4) from Dennis Haen for the $100 donation to the Kaukauna Veterans Memorial; 5) from Brianna Reseburg for receiving the Good Citizenship Award. She attended Appleton North High School and 6) from Elizabeth Eggert for receiving the Good Citizenship Award. She attended Appleton East High School.

Sr. Vice Cmdr.: Gimmick is good.

 

Jr. Vice Cmdr.: Membership is: 349 life, 84 continuous, 2 reinstalled and 15 new for a total of 450 or 101.7%. 445 needed for 100%.

 

 

Public Information: Pictures of the Old Glory Honor Flight, LZ Lambeau, Memorial Day and Flag Day activities.

 

Youth: The Good Citizenship Award was presented to the students at the five high schools. Thank you to Bob Brown and Joe Cahill in helping present the awards.

 

Bowling, New Members, Buddy Poppy, Service Officer, Teacher of the Year and VOD. Had no report.

 

Life Membership: As of January 1, 2007 membership dues increased. With the Post installment pay plan, you pay back the Post in 8 payments. This is over a 2 year period. Contact Steve Conto about getting a life membership. After the life membership is paid up, the Post reimburses the member with a $35 rebate.

 

House Committee: Normal business. Discussed the damage to the roof of the Post building.

 

Request for Funding: 1) recommended to support purchase of wreath for $85 to be used at the Memorial Day Program at Highland Memorial Cemetery; 2) recommended to support the purchase of two club gift certificates, for $25 each, to present John Calnin for the use of his flat bed truck and Cadillac. These vehicles where use in the Flag Day Parade by Post and Auxiliary members; 3) recommended to support purchase of two club gift certificates, for $25 each, to Linden Stroess for the storage of the float that was used in the Flag Day Parade and 4) recommended to support paying the expenses of the Commander, Sr. Vice Commander, Quartermaster and Service Officer at the V.F.W. State Convention. This would be $0.50 per mile and two night stay at a hotel for a total of $319 per person for 2010.

 

Unfinished Business: 1) no unfinished business.

 

New Business: 1) motion made by Jim Zimmer, second by Ray Nelson and passed for the following to be delegates at the V.F.W. Good of the Order: 1) F.V.V.C. meeting will be held at Andy Clark’s office at 6:30 pm on June 15th. Andy is the county Veteran Service Office; 2) Don Eiden presented Commander Rettler with a Certificate of Appreciation for the Post’s helping in the American Legion Flag Retirement Ceremony. The certificate was signed by American Legion Post Commander William Burton; 3) the Post / Auxiliary picnic is on August 1st at Plamann Park. Lunch at noon with activities to follow for youth and adults. Bring a dish to pass and your own plate and utensils; 4) Joe Cahill discussed how the “Wounded Warrior Project” was developing; 5) Wisconsin V.F.W. State Commander Wilfred “Twiggy” Johnson spoke on activities and events going on within the State V.F.W.; 5) there was a article in the Appleton Post Crescent interviewing Russ Krueger and Bob Lichtfuss during the Flag Day Parade and 6) Commander Rettler Thanked the membership for their help in making his term as Commander so successful. He asked that we do the same for the new Commander, Al Kudrle.

General information: 1) newsletters and flyers were passed around to the membership to view; 2) Greenlawn Memorial Park will host the Armed Forces Day Program on Saturday, May 15th; 3) golf outing for Old Glory Honor Flight at Westhaven Golf Club on June 18th and 4) American Legion Post 38 will have their poppy drive on May 14th. Public Information: Old Glory Honor Flight, where WW II Veterans go to Washington D.C. to see the WW II Memorial and other sites, was on April 8th. Those from the Post that were on the flight are: Arnie Van Handel, Joe Verhyen and Larry Witthuhn. Arnie spoke on how an enjoyable trip it was.

 

Teacher of the Year: The Teacher of the Year recipient will be at the Loyalty Day Banquet. He will receive his award for being selected and tell what he did to receive the award.

 

Service Officer: Bob Passow has heart problems.

WW II Veterans are flown to Washington D.C. to visit the WW II Memorial and other sights; 2) recommended supporting the Hines Blind Center with $100. They help blind Veterans by taking them to activities and functions; 3) recommended to support the Moving Wall, that the V.F.W. 8th District is funding, for the LZ Lambeau event with $100 and 4) recommended to support Dennis Haen, who is doing a marathon to raise funds for the Veterans memorial in Kaukauna with $100

Nominations will again be held at the May meeting with elections to follow; 2) motion made by Al Kudrle, second by Fred McCrory and passed to publish the newsletter on a monthly bases; 3) motion made by Jake Paltzer, second by Fred Mc Crory and passed to donate $100 to the Hines Blind Center. Loyalty Day Parade on May 1st at the Duck Creek Post in Green Bay; 5) Kwik Trip has given a large donation to the Old Glory Honor Flight. Try to support them; 6) Steve Conto has tickets for the Saturday evening program at LZ Lambeau. This is a “Welcome Home” event to the Vietnam War and era Vietnam Veterans; 7) will need an Honor Guard for the opening of the LZ Lambeau event. This will starts with the presentation of the “Moving Wall” on Thursday, May 20th. and 8) the Post Loyalty Day Banquet is May8th. Sign up at the bar or call 733-9774.

Jr. Vice Cmdr.: Membership is: 349 life, 79 continuous, 1 reinstalled and 10 new for a total of 439 or 98.65%. 445 needed for 100%.

Public Information: Members of the Post, American Legion Post 38, Patriot Guard Riders, other Veterans and people “Welcomed Home” Jordan Olson. He was returning home from Afghanistan. This was at the Outagamie County airport on Saturday March 3rd.

Bowling: Did not get the application in on time so no Post team will be participating at the State tournament.

Youth: Department of Wisconsin winner Elizabeth Laskowski, in the Patriot Pen Program, placed 17th at the National level. This was reported by Bruce Sorensen, Department Chairperson.

1) recommended to support the Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve with $100. This is to be used on projects that will help make activities easier for handicap people that use the preserve;

2) recommended to support the V.F.W. National Operation Uplink, Unmet Needs and Military Assistance Programs with $50 and

3) recommended supporting sending the Post’s Boy Scout Troop Eagle Scout recipient to the Boy Scout Gathering Waters Banquet. The cost is $20

New Business:

1) motion made by Steve Conto, second by Bob Brown and passed to elect Ray Nelson to complete the 2009 – 2010 year as Post Jr. Vice Commander and Kimberly Kamps to complete the 2009 – 2010 year as 3 Year Trustee. She is completing Ray Nelson’s term as 3 Year Trustee;

2) the following people were nominated for the 2010 – 2011 Post year: Commander – Al Kudrle, Sr. Vice Cmdr. – open, Jr. Vic Cmdr. – Ray Nelson, Chaplain – Robert Hotz, Quartermaster – Steve Conto, Surgeon – Bill Remter, Judge Advocate – Mike Borg, House Committee – Emmet Erdman and Bill Remter (2 positions are up for elections) and 3 Year Trustee – open. Nominations will again be held at the April meeting with elections at the May meeting;

3) motion made by Emmet Erdmann, second by Mike Page and passed to withdrawal $500 from the Funeral Fund to be used for expenses;

4) motion made by Mike Borg, second by Joe Cahill and passed to donate $500 to the Auxiliary as a gift from the Post. This is for the Auxiliary’s 75th Anniversary;

5) motion made by Jake Paltzer, second by Fred McCrory and passed to support sending the Post’s Boy Scout Troop Eagle Scout recipient to the Boy Scout Gathering Waters Banquet. The cost is $20;

2) Joe Cahill has a list of ships from the Vietnam War that were exposed to Agent Orange. The list was passed around at the meeting. Will put the list in the newsletter;

3) Major John Oakley, with Appleton’s 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, 32nd Brigade of the Wisconsin National Guard, recently returned from Iraq. Major Oakley Thanked the Post for its support of the National Guard;

4) Dave Blum won the drawing in the Post’s recruiting a new member drive. Dave will receive an American Flag and pole. Joe Cahill and Jack Voight organized the drive;

5) Cootie 4th District meeting will be held at the Post on Saturday March 13th;

6) the Post received a Certificate of Appreciation from American Legion Post 38 – Badger Boys. The Post sponsored 1 student in their Badger Boy Program;

7) Terry Worsech and John Kelnhofer discussed how homeless Veterans could make a living by selling products from organic farming and

8) American Legion Post 38 was disappointed with the representation from the Post at the Veterans Day Banquet held at the American Legion Post 38. The American Legion Post and this V.F.W. Post take turns every year holding the banquet.
